The graduation Mass was held in the Church of the Visitation on Wednesday 28th of June. The Sixth Class children each received a certificate from Canon Duhig following the ceremony. We wish them the very best as they venture on to Secondary school. We are sure they will hold fond memories of their time at Monagea N.S.
Go néirí an t-ádh libh go léir!
This year our Sports’ Day was another resounding success owing to many positive factors. Firstly we were blessed with glorious weather. Secondly our wonderful Parents’ Association organised many fun activities for the children both in the pitch and in the school grounds. At 1pm the children participated in a series of races and there was huge delight when the ice-cream van came to deliver a cone for everyone in the entire school. Míle Buíochas to the Parents’ Association for their Trojan work in making the day the massive success it was. Thanks to all parents and past pupils who helped out at the stations. We are all very much looking forward to next year already!
Congratulations to the girls’ basketball team who performed fantastically in their Basketball Blitz in Newcastle West on June 12th. It was a hotly contested event and the girls had wins against Castlemahon and Killoughteen followed by a narrow defeat of two baskets by Scoil Iosaf. At the end of the preliminary rounds Scoil Iosaf and Monagea were tied at the top of the group and had to play again to decide the competition winners. After full time the teams were inseparable and extra time was required. Unfortunately we were defeated in the dying seconds by a single basket. Huge congratulations to the girls who played with such esteem and well done to Aurelie our captain who led the team. Many thanks to Miss Fitzgerald for her hard work in preparing the team and her involvement in organising the event.
All of our hard work has paid off!
Monagea National School has achieved a Science Foundation Ireland Discover Science and Maths Plaque of STEM Excellence for the 2016/17 academic year.
It was fantastic to see all of the science, technology, engineering and maths work being carried out in our school with such enthusiasm. Well done to everyone involved!
We wish the students of Fifth and Sixth Classes, along with their teachers Ms. Fitzgerald and Ms. Collins, the very best of luck on their Confirmation Day. Thankfully the sun is shining for the occasion.
Despite the wet weather we were thrilled to have ice-cream at school on Thursday June 1st 2017. The entire student body each donated €2 for this worthy cause and each child enjoyed some delicious ice-cream and wafers. This annual event is kindly sponsored by HB ice-cream. Dooley’s Super Valu Newcastle West generously donate the wafers so all proceeds go to Down Syndrome Ireland. Many thanks to Mary King for organising and collecting the important goods in town!
We held our annual Bake Sale in aid of CRY on Friday 26th May. This event organised by Mrs Daly has become very much looked forward to in our school as we remember our past pupils Niamh and Darra, whilst fundraising for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). Once again the sale was very well supported. A large array of freshly made buns, cakes, tarts and treats were donated. The children really enjoyed spending their money and enjoyed their treats. In the afternoon many locals attended the hall to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. Míle Búiochas to all who who worked so hard to make the day a success. Thanks to the children and their families who supported the bake sale. We are looking forward to next year already!
We have been very busy in the GAA department at Monagea NS in recent times.
The camogie team participated in a blitz on Monday last. They played Croagh, Shountrade and Granagh. The girls played well against stiff competition and managed a win against Granagh. Míle buíochas to Mrs. Daly for training the team.
Huge congratulations to Lilly Duggan and Ava Baynham who were successful in obtaining a place in the Eithne Neville Team. It was a huge honour for the girls to play with this team and the school was very proud of their efforts. Many thanks to Ms. Denise Fitzgerald who was a selector for the team.
We wish the school team the very best of luck in their upcoming semi final, details of which are yet to be fixed. We wish them all along with their trainer/coach/selector. Ms. Fitzgerald, continued success.
